Sri Lankan CJ appears again before impeachment panel

Sri Lanka’s chief justice has appeared before a Parliamentary committee for a second time to answer impeachment charges amid protests supporting and opposing her.
Thousands of government-supporters called for Shirani Bandaranayake’s resignation as she left the court complex on Tuesday. Lawyers and religious leaders greeted her.
The government has accused Ms. Bandaranayake of misusing power and having unexplained wealth. She denies any wrongdoing.
Opposition parties and independent analysts say the impeachment attempt is aimed at stifling judiciary independence and concentrating power with President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
