Nuclear
Transmutation:
The process of conversion deals with an isotope or a chemical element to be converted into another element with the help of radioactive decay/ nuclear reactions.
This method is considered to be the savior of the environment because it reduces the radioactive waste from the nuclear power plants.
Natural Transmutation:
Certain radioactive elements present in nature spontaneously decay by a process that causes transmutation, such as alpha or beta decay.
Artificial or human intervened transmutation:
Artificial transmutations occur in machinery that has enough energy to cause changes in the nuclear structure of the elements.
Machines that can cause artificial transmutation include particle accelerators and tokamak reactors.
Conventional fission power reactors also cause artificial transmutation, not from the power of the machine, but by exposing elements to neutrons produced by fission from an artificially produced nuclear chain reaction.
Why nuclear transmutation is on the recent news?
Nuclear transmutation helps to reduce the radioactive waste from nuclear power plants. This method is considered by many countries, such as Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, United States of America and etc. Many experts and social activists in India said that this method will be useful for our nation to reduce our radioactive waste.
