The
Schuman Declaration was presented by French foreign minister Robert Schuman on
9 May 1950. It proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community,
whose members would pool coal and steel production.
The
ECSC (founding members: France, West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium
and Luxembourg) was the first of a series of supranational European
institutions that would ultimately become today's "European Union". Starting
with the coal and steel sector, would revitalise the whole European economy by
similar community processes & it is the world's first international
anti-cartel agency.
It
encouraged world peace and it would transform Europe by a 'step by step'
process (building through sectoral supranational communities) leading to the
unification of Europe. The recent news is the decision to award the Nobel Peace
Prize to the European Union.
Prize
motivation: ”for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and
reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe”. But the only problem is,
"the Nobel comes at completely the wrong time.
It would have made perfect
sense 20 years ago when the Cold War was over and Europe was whole, free and at
peace for the first time in its history. But with the continent mired in its
gravest social and economic crisis since the 1930s and the EU project in danger
of unravelling, it feels like a consolation prize -- like a lifetime
achievement award at the Oscars or a retirement gift for decades of loyal
service". This is the issue in this recent news.
